Novo mesto is the administrative, economic, ecclesiastical, cultural, educational, health and sports center of the Dolenjska region. It is known for its exceptionally successful industries especially the pharmaceutical industry, the automotive sector, the construction enterprises and textile industry. Large companies such as Krka, Revoz, Adria Mobil and TPV have chosen the municipality of Novo mesto as their home.
Novo mesto was awarded its town rights on April the 7th 1365 by Duke Rudolf IV of Hapsburg. This date is also celebrated as the day of the municipality. The rich archaeological sites in Novo mesto have also made it known as “Novo mesto – the town of situlae”. Together with Maribor, Murska Sobota, Ptuj, Slovenj Gradec and Velenje, Novo mesto was the European Capital of Culture 2012.
In addition to the Krka River and its famous meander, the town is also famous for the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, the Main Square with the Town Hall and its well known Riverbank.
